[CARG.UL] for high-oleic canola oil were unenforceable in the United States. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed the ruling by a federal judge in a lawsuit filed by Dow AgroSciences LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow Chemical Co. (DOW.N: Quote, Profile, Research). The case centers on patents for high-oleic canola oils, vegetable oils that are free of unhealthy trans-fatty acids and have superior cooking stability and shelf life for food makers. New U.S. labeling standards that mandate revealing trans-fatty acids in foods have helped boost demand for high-oleic oils. Cargill spokesman Bill Brady said the company was still studying the decision, but it "appears to be a disappointing ruling for us."
