- 10th Annual KIPO-WIPO Advanced International Certificate Course -

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner of KIPO, Wonjoo
Park) held the opening ceremony for the 10th Annual KIPO-WIPO Advanced
International Certificate Course (AICC) in Seoul on Tuesday, November 5.

KIPO has been taking the lead in spreading and expanding IP education
worldwide. It has been developing, in collaboration with WIPO, online global
IP educational contents and also been jointly operating the KIPO-WIPO AICC
with WIPO, KAIST and the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA)
since 2010 to educate and train global IP experts needed for companies.

Marking the 10th year of running the AICC, 1,286 people from 107 countries
took online courses for AICC this year, making it the largest number of
AICC enrollees since its operation.

The opening ceremony was attended by approximately 100 people, including
Vice Commissionor Sechang Cheon of KIPO, Executive Director Sherif
Saadallah of WIPO, Vice President Joon-hoh Goh of KIPA, and those who
completed online courses with top performances and those working in the IPR
industries.

In his welcoming speech, Vice Commissioner Sechang Cheon of KIPO
remarked that due to the development of new technologies, the IP-divide
between the developed and developing countries is growing and that the KIPO
would work toward narrowing the IP-divide by providing aid and support to the
developing countries, backed by the experience of the nation which has
transformed itself from the developing country to the leading IP power in a
short period of time.

After that, illustrious IP experts both at home and abroad, including Professor
Clinton Francis of Northwestern University School of Law in U.S., Professor
Tana Pistorius, a South African expert in the field of technology transfer and
licensing, and Professor Sung-pil Park of KAIST Master of Intellectual Property,
gave on-site lectures on IP management strategies.

There were also interesting exhibitions and displays set up in an open-air
space just outside the event hall, attracting the eyes of the ceremony attendees,
including commemorative photographs of AICC activities each year and video
recordings of the AICC participants since its inception.

Also, advanced IP educational courses are conducted from November 6th
(Wed.) to 8th (Fri.) for the high performers preselected from those who
completed online courses for AICC. These advanced courses will be run in
the Korea Intellectual Property Center in Seoul and will include, in addition to
IP-related lectures, programs designed to help trainees improve their practical
skills such as negotiation games for technology transfer and team simulations
on IP management.

Director general Sungho Mok of the Intellectual Property Protection &
International Cooperation Bureau of the KIPO said, “Korea is a world leader
in IP education. We will continue to strengthen IP competitiveness of our
talents both at home and abroad by using our accumulated experience and
know-hows in education and thereby raise our nation’s status and reputation
worldwide.”
